Town Centres Management

North Tyneside CouncilThe town centre management initiative is one of the ways in which North Tyneside Council supports local businesses in the borough.

The Town Centres Manager is John Fleet who is based at the Business Centre in North Shields.

John explains "town centre management was originally an American response to the decline of traditional town centres in the face of competition from large out of town shopping malls. Like many American ideas it crossed the pond and the first town centre managers appeared in this country about ten year ago. Now there are around 300 of us up and down the country, all working to promote and protect our traditional town and city centres."

"My mission statement talks about promoting and sustaining the town centres as vibrant and attractive places in which to shop, work, play and live. Working in partnership with local traders and the local authority together with the police and other agencies is the key to success. In North Tyneside the town centres management initiative is specifically focussed on the three towns of North Shields, Wallsend and Whitley Bay. Whilst they are similar in size and location, they are distinctive in many ways. My challenge is to play to each town's strengths, whilst working to address their weaknesses."

"This web site is one example of how we are going about promoting the town centres. The web is great resource particularly for the smaller business of which there are many in the three towns, as it allows them to appear on a level playing field with the biggest companies in the world, and increases their potential market from thousands to millions of customers."
