The new Whitley Bay and Tynemouth Guide 2009, created by Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade members Paul Irwin and Chris Wilson, to promote the coastal strip from Whitley Bay to Tynemouth, including Cullercoats and North Shields Fish Quay, is now onboard DFDS ships serving the Port of Tyne International Terminal.
In a bid to bring more visitors to the Coast, Paul and Chris have created this 104 page handbook featuring editorial from contributors including legendary TV and film writer Ian La Frenais, Lindisfarne’s Ray Laidlaw and TV presenter and novelist Bob Langley, to name just a few.
Initially a print run of 60,000 was planned but due to the popularity of this year’s Guide the run will be increased to 80,000. Chair of Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade, Bill Midgley, will be overseeing delivery of the Guides to the Princess of Norway ship on Wednesday. Bill commented: ‘It’s very good news when a company such as DFDS Seaways gets behind us in order to promote our wonderful coast, if we can make more visitors aware that we have something very special in our coastline here, then it will be good news for the area in general and will have a very positive effect on North Tyneside.’
Paul Irwin added: ‘Since we launched the 2009 Guide ten days ago over 30,000 copies are now in circulation, we’re receiving e-mails daily from readers commenting on how entertained they have been by the content. I can safely say that all the hard work has definitely been very much worth it. EastCoast Taxis Ambassadors based at the Port of Tyne were handing out Guides to cruise passengers on the Eurodam and Rotterdam ships when they visited at the weekend and many visitors decided to spend some time in Tynemouth on the strength of what they read about in the Guide, exactly what we set out to do.’ I
