Wallsend Pubs and Clubs

A new local book telling the history of the pubs and clubs of Wallsend, Howdon and Willington Quay is to be published in April.

Wallsend Pubs and Clubs contains as many of the pubs and clubs in the Wallsend, Howdon and Willington Quay areas that are known to have existed. Where possible photographs of each establishment have been included along with some interesting history of the buildings.

Author Steve Boundey says: “Records show that the first public houses in Wallsend were built as far back as the early 1800s. Most of these public houses were situated on or around the High Street. More public houses were dotted around the outskirts of Wallsend and more were located in the nearby villages of Willington Quay and Howdon. Although I have tried to have at least one drink in all of the pubs and clubs in Wallsend, there are many establishments where this was not possible, as they were closed and demolished long before I could visit them. I have tried to include a photograph of each pub or club but in some cases this has proved impossible.”

It is hoped that this book brings back many happy memories of the good old days for anyone who has had a pint or two in some of these pubs and clubs and gives a fascinating insight to the old pubs that used to dominate the area. Steve Boundey says: “It seems the recent credit crunch has seen off many of our pubs. The ‘last orders’ bell has been rung in many a pub over the recent years. Who would have thought that the local pubs that we, our parents and our grandparents drank in are now being closed and even demolished at an alarming rate.”

The book has been published by Summerhill Books, a Tyneside company who specialise in local history publications.

The book is to be launched at Wallsend Library on Friday, 16th April at 2 pm.

The book will then be on sale at Harry Smith’s & Keel Row Book Shops in North Shields and Fenwick’s & Robinson’s in Newcastle.
