'The River Coquet rises on the remote upper slopes of Brownhart Law, close to the Roman Military complex of Chew Green, and for the first 10 miles of a long and wayward journey to the North Sea this magnificent river rubs shoulders with some of the finest hills in Northumberland. Here, seemingly light years from the stresses and strains of 21st century life, the `Hills of Upper Coquetdale` offer walking of the highest quality.` (Geoff Holland)
A book of eight self-guided walks entitled `The Hills of Upper Coquetdale` by outdoor writer Geoff Holland has just been published by Darlington-based Trailguides Limited.
On launching the book, Lyn Shevels of Trailguides Limited said, 'Over the past 4 years, Geoff has a acquired a reputation for devising original and interesting walking routes in the Cheviot Hills and his work has regularly appeared in national walking magazines `Country Walking` and `TGO (The Great Outdoors)` as well the ever-popular `Northumbrian` magazine. His first two books of walks, `The Cheviot Hills` and `Walks from Wooler` were published by us in 2007 and 2008 respectively and have proved extremely popular. This latest book, which follows a similar format to the first two books, takes a detailed look at the vast array of hills which climb up from the River Coquet between its source, close to the English/Scottish border, and the sleepy village of Alwinton. It is a book which will inspire walkers to pack their sandwiches, pull on their boots and to head for the hills of Upper Coquetdale. This is a unique collection of walks in the most tranquil corner of England'.
The eight walks, with detailed, easy to follow route descriptions, range between 8½ miles and 12 miles and the book, which contains a selection of both colour and black and white photographs and a host of fascinating information about the area, retails at £8.50. It is the fourth book in the publishers `Northumberland Walker` series and is available online from www.trailguides.co.uk , locally from Outdoor World (Ilfracombe Gardens Whitley Bay), Culture Quarter (Marine Avenue Whitley Bay) and Fenwicks Book Dept (Northumberland Street Newcastle upon Tyne) and from all good bookshops and Tourist Information Centres.
