Whitley Bay Town Cup winners

North Sea Volunteer Lifeguards (NSVL) has won the Whitley Bay Town Cup.

Chairman of the Council, Cllr Michael Huscroft, will present the cup to the winner at the full meeting of North Tyneside Council on Thursday 21 January, following a civic reception.

The local authority presents the prestigious trophy to any organisation or individual of the town who has brought about an outstanding event in the last year, or has been of outstanding service to the community.

Councillors who represent wards in the seaside town considered nominations and recognised the positive work carried out by the NSVL with the community and the valuable training they provide.

James Parkinson, from Whitley Bay is the North Sea Volunteer Lifeguards' Secretary. He said: "The news has come as a massive surprise and we're delighted to have been awarded the Whitley Bay Town Cup.

"We feel the award is great recognition for the hard work of all those who give their time to help NSVL, from the teachers and lifeguards who run training sessions and courses, to those who help behind the scenes."

Previous winners of the cup, which dates back to 1954, includes Whitley Bay Football Club, the Royal British Legion and the Whitley Bay PLAYHOUSE.

Chairman of the Council, Cllr Michael Huscroft said: "The North Sea Volunteer Lifeguards are deserving winners of this trophy, and rightly join a long list of prestigious recipients.

"The work carried out by the volunteers is invaluable and this cup goes somewhere in showing them our appreciation for their invaluable efforts."
