Next phase of Whitley Bay regeneration on display

22-SEP-09

Issued by: Jeanette Hedley

Information about the next phase of regeneration for Whitley Bay will go on public display later this month.

PLAYHOUSE, in Marine Avenue, Whitley Bay - recently re-opened after a multi-million pound revamp - will host the exhibition on September 28,29 and 30, from 1pm - 7pm.

The public will have an opportunity to give their views on the next phase of improvements to Whitley Park, which won the Children's Play category in the prestigious Local Government News Street Design 2008 competition for its play site.

Those attending the exhibition will be asked to feedback on a range of options that could be included, such as a new water play area, a BMX track, a multi-use sports area, and some proposed improvements to its lay-out.

Those visiting the exhibition will also be able to inspect the proposals to re- route the road behind the Spanish City site to enable the frontage to be transformed into an attractive public space.

And there will be a range of drawings and information on show to explain the proposals for the future of the Spanish City site and the potential uses of The Dome.

Mayor, Linda Arkley said: "The removal of the joint service centre proposals from Whitley Park have provided us with a great opportunity to review the next stage of the town's regeneration.

"It has to be an option that puts the town firmly on the map again for visitors, but also caters for the needs of local people. That's why we are putting these proposals on show and giving the public the chance to shape some aspects of the package, such as the design of the next phase of work to Whitley Park."
