Works begins on Playhouse transformation

23-APR-08

Contractors have this begun work on the £8million refurbishment of Whitley Bay Playhouse into a state of the art cultural venue.

SURGO, a Newcastle based company, has been awarded the contract by North Tyneside Council.

The redevelopment an elegant new glass foyer and new front of house facilities, plus a redesigned auditorium, new green room and chorus rooms.

"This is another boost for the £60m regeneration of Whitley Bay," said Elected Mayor, John Harrison.

"It will be a cultural venue that can attract the best of the country's drama and music for audiences from North Tyneside and the wider region. I'm sure residents will be delighted that this work is now underway."

SURGO's director, Jeff Alexander, said: "After undertaking initial enabling works we are now starting the main construction works in earnest.

"This latest project further cements our ongoing relationship with North Tyneside Council and although it will be challenging in parts, I am confident that it will run smoothly.

"Following the national 'Considerate Constructors' scheme will ensure that we minimise disruption to local residents."

A key stage in the development will be the demolition of the front of the building, expected in the next few weeks, to make way for the glass atrium to the front of the new Playhouse.

The revamp of the Whitley Bay Playhouse is a key part in the regeneration scheme for Whitley Bay.

The new Whitley Bay play site has already been completed and work is underway on the new skate park on the Links.

Work is continuing on Whitley Bay leisure Pool, which when completed will offer innovative active water play equipment for children and a flume, an improved gym, sauna, steam room and dance studio along with new changing areas.

And plans for the joint service centre, being delivered in partnership with the PCT and NNTLIFTCo, are currently being refined to provide a new library, tourist information centre, housing office, customer service centre, adult social care teams and space for the community to hire.
