Mayor launches policy to tackle law-breakers

25-MAR-09

Issued by: Jeanette Hedley

North Tyneside's Elected Mayor, John Harrison has today (Wednesday, March 25) kicked off consultation on the council's new plan to tackle unruly and unlawful behaviour and make the borough an even safer place.

Members of the public are being invited to comment on North Tyneside Council's draft Enforcement Policy over a 12-week period.

The blueprint contains plans to toughen action on nuisance neighbours, litter offences, and licensing issues.

And it aims to cement plans to work closely with the police over joint actions which make communities safer for all.

Elected Mayor, John Harrison said: " People have consistently told me this is one of their top priorities even though North Tyneside is the safest borough of its type. I agree with them and this is why we are stepping up our efforts as a council to use legislation the government has given us to tackle anti-social behaviour.

"I will be taking a particular interest in how to propose to tackle under-age drinking and the resulting anti-social behaviour that blights communities."

The policy explains how the council will carry out all its enforcement and regulatory responsibilities. The Policy will also guide prosecution decisions.

And it ensures the council is fully compliant with the latest legislation and the government's Enforcement Concordat.

In developing the revised policy North Tyneside Council welcomes views from interested parties, businesses and residents in North Tyneside.

Members of trade, residents and businesses can submit any written comments on the draft policy which is available for inspection on the council's website www.northtyneside.gov.uk and at council offices and libraries.

Copies of the draft policy can also be obtained from the Consumer Protection Group, North Tyneside Council, North Shields Business Centre, 54a Saville Street, North Shields, NE30 1NT, or from any library.
