Free parking in town centres

16-DEC-09

North Tyneside Christmas shoppers and businesses are benefiting from two-hours free parking now in place in the borough's town centre car parks.

The scheme, introduced at the request of North Tyneside Mayor Linda Arkley, is aimed at making North Tyneside's shopping centres attractive places for both customers and local shops.

The car parks involved in each of the towns are:
- In Whitley Bay - the Whitley Road car park (near the health centre) and Park Road car park (near the library)
- In Wallsend - Alexandra Street car park; Coronation Street car park; John Street car park.
- North Shields - Norfolk Street car park

The car parks have had their ticket machines removed. However, there will be a maximum stay of two hours, with a restriction of no return within four hours.

Mayor, Linda Arkley said; "I am confident this move is going to benefit both shoppers and businesses in our town centres, particularly in the run up to Christmas.

"I am delighted to be delivering on a promise that I made to the electorate, that we would provide free parking in our town centres.

"This measure will hopefully give shoppers the time to make use of the facilities in our town centres, as well as stopping shop or office workers occupying spaces throughout the day."
