Free maps encourage residents to get cycling

To support the huge growth in cycle trips in North Tyneside new maps have been produced and are now available free of charge.

North Tyneside Council has joined together with its Local Transport Plan Partners in Tyne and Wear, and South East Northumberland, to produce a series of six new cycle maps covering the five districts of Tyne and Wear (Gateshead, Newcastle, Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside) and the South East Northumberland area.

A comprehensive cycle mapping audit, carried out by Cycle City Guides during October and November 2007, has ensured that the maps are the most up-to-date available

The maps will be available both electronically and in paper format.

Councillor Eddie Darke, Cabinet member for Safe and Active Communities said: "As a council we are committed to helping people keep fit and healthy and cycling is not only great exercise, but also an environmentally friendly way to get out and about around the borough and the wider region.

"We hope the maps will encourage more people to get cycling in the area. They show the entire local road and rail network, on and off-road cycle routes, places of interest, crossing points, cycle shops and cycle parking. And when you're on foot, they double as a handy street map."

The new electronic maps are available on the Tyne and Wear LTP website http://www.tyneandwearltp.co.uk/ also on the North Tyneside Council website at www.northtyneside.gov.uk
